Re: BREAKING NEWS - Bin Laden

According to Time Magazine..yea and no. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad was waterboarded but Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not. The major leads came from Al-Libbi..not Khalid Sheikh Mohammad according to the article. Realize that "enhanced interrogation" can be sleep deprivation, seclusion, exposure to loud music, etc. It doesn't necessiarily mean physical torture. The link to the Time article is below...but we will not know the straight story for many moons IMO...the media is just grasping at straws right now following any lead they can find a source to claim what they write is the facts...It'll be a long while before we know the specifics on how Bin Laden was truly found cuz they are probably using the same techniques to find other high level Al Queda targets.

    Some excerpts from the article:
"Jose Rodriguez ran the CIA?s CounterTerrorism Center from 2002 to 2005 during the period when top al-Qaeda leaders Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (KSM) and Abu Faraj al-Libbi were taken into custody and subjected to ?enhanced interrogation techniques? at secret black site prisons overseas. KSM was subjected to waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other techniques. Al Libbi was not waterboarded, but other EITs were used on him.

Rodriguez?s assertion drew criticism from the White House. ?There is no way that information obtained by [enhanced interrogation techniques] was the decisive intelligence that led us directly to bin Laden,? says National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor. ?It took years of collection and analysis from many different sources to develop the case that enabled us to identify this compound, and reach a judgment that bin Laden was likely to be living there.?

Rodriguez agrees that other events played a role in developing the intelligence on bin Laden?s whereabouts. And he says that despite widespread focus on KSM, al Libbi?s information was the most important. ?Both KSM and al Libbi were held at CIA black sites and subjected to enhanced interrogation techniques,? Rodriguez says. ?Abu Faraj was not waterboarded, but his information on the courier was key.?

How the CIA Broke the 9/11 Attacks Mastermind - The Blotter

If we're going to call stuff "facts", let's at least be accurate.

    1) Panetta and the CIA said it was a part of what got us UBL, not the entirety of it. How much of it was waterboarding Now--what I said above was an opinion on my part--not fact. I'll clearly delineate that for everyone's finer points of what I said. And I did not claim it as fact. My opinion is based off of...

    2) Read the ABC article above. It wasn't the "waterboarding" itself (note at the end of the article that it took 183 waterboarding sessions). It ended up being the humiliation of it being witnessed by a WOMAN, once. He didn't give up any information related to UBL until several months after he broke due to being waterboarded in front of a woman, and he gave it up in the course of normal interrogation techniques.

And before this gets quoted from the article:
A current CIA official says that KSM actually told interrogators the only reason he confessed was because of the water-boarding.
What was so different about this one time that broke him? A woman was present. So--as I read it, KSM was too proud to admit to interrogators that it was the shame of a woman witnessing him being belittled and abused in that way that caused him to break. If a woman viewing that was his ultimate shame, you think that is going to be something he freely admits, especially since he doesn't want it to happen ever again? Because I don't.

Phone call by Kuwaiti courier led to bin Laden - Yahoo! News

The above article says THE key piece of information was the slip-up by UBL's courier. A US official in that article says "Hassan Ghul was the linchpin". Hassan Ghul gave up the courier and al-Libi. Al-Libi then gave up the courier, al-Kuwaiti.

Keep in mind this too in relation to KSM (from the AP/Yahoo article):
After the CIA captured al-Qaida's No. 3 leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, he confirmed knowing al-Kuwaiti but denied he had anything to do with al-Qaida. ...

Mohammed did not discuss al-Kuwaiti while being subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, former officials said. He acknowledged knowing him many months later under standard interrogation, they said, leaving it once again up for debate as to whether the harsh technique was a valuable tool or an unnecessarily violent tactic.
Agree/disagree, that's fine--I don't care. I honestly don't. But I think by the above that my opinion is at least a valid one, because no one knows for sure what worked/what didn't.

At the end of the day--we got the ******* and I'm one happy American, as all of you are, no matter how it all transpired.

Re: BREAKING NEWS - Bin Laden

Many years of info led to this, and many tactics of interrogation led to this. Fake names were given for the courier or no name at all by many. Putting multiple stories together to figure out exactly who he was. The biggest key did end up being an intercepted phone call 8 months ago though in finally pinpointing exactly who he was and tracking his whereabouts specifically even though that compound had been looked at since 06 just wondering exactly who was living there. This is probably the biggest pat on the back the CIA has gotten in a long time, even though they deserve alot more.

This whole argument is stupid. Everyone can always pull up something off the internet to explain and verify their arguments on any subject. Can't we just say we got the son of a ***** and forget it? This is all just stupid.

Osama bin Laden compound in Abbottabad - in pictures | World news | guardian.co.uk

Some pics of the others killed at the compound, pretty graphic. Turns out his wife wasn't used as a shield, she did rush the Seals and was shot in the leg.
